Thanks very much, Astrid! These were done with Unison soft pastels and with a few colored Conté crayons and pastel pencils. If your interested, I’ve recently added more information to my blog about the pastels I use – you can find it by clicking the “Pastels” link at the top of this page. Unison has a really nice range of browns and grays and I relied upon them extensively here. I also used various brown shades of Conté for the initial drawing before working with soft pastel.

Thanks very much for your kind feedback, Loriann! I’m learning a lot from doing these about trying to achieve a sense of subtlety and a pureness of color and form, so I’m glad you see this here.

Thanks for visiting my blog Brian and I am pleased you are enjoying the Ludwig set. This is lovely work! The close values and subtle color harmonies combined with the paper surfaces make for a stunning image. BTW, I’ve just ordered a sample batch of Twinrocker papers to try out on some charcoal drawings I’m working on.

Hi Brian,
I find your paper choice really interesting. One can feel the mood of a dull day in November.
The light brown and beige in the foreground is just the same color I recognized in a field the other day. So funny to see it in one of your paintings.
